Observing the Effects of Acid Rain

Aim: To see the effects of acid rain to our environment.

Equipment:  Petri dish, Weigh boat, baby flower, calcium carbonate, universals indication, bromothymol blue, sodium sulfide and acid

    Method:
    1. Place the weigh boat in the middle of the Petri dish.
    2. Moist the chunk of apple and baby flower petal with water then place them both in the Petri dish around the weigh boat. Add 1 scoop of calcium carbonate that is moist and Make sure they are all placed separately.
    3. Do 3 drops of universals indication and 3 drops of bromothymol blue around the weigh boat and around the Petri dish. Keep them separate.
    4.  In the weigh boat put a scoop of sodium sulfide. Drop water on it then stir.
    5. Add 4 drops of acid in the weigh boat then quickly close it.

     Results:
Image result for acid rain experiment

Observation: We saw how the universal indication, which was green at first and the bromothymol blue changed colour. The universal indication turned into a peachy like colour and the bromothymol blue turned green and yellow. We also noticed how the red baby flower petal started to turn a light pink colour though it was supposed to turn hard but we didn't have time. The apple turned a little bit dry and hard but due to not having much time it was still a bit moist. The moist calcium carbonate turned crusty. These all happened because of the effects of acid rain.

Explanation: Acid rain was formed when fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas was burned. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released in the air and rise up the atmosphere. The molecules dissolve in the water in the clouds. Then the rainwater becomes more acidic.

    Conservation week

Conservation means to prevent waste use of energy.  Conservation week encourages people to take care of and get involved in nature. It happens from 14th-22nd of September. There are activities, events and competitions.

I think that this is very important because the earth is suffering. it is in need of our help since it is our only home. What will the future generation have if we don't take care of it? Right now our problem is Climate Change and Global Warming. There are still ways to change this. We can help prevent this by:

Riding a Bike or Walking to School, by doing this we can reduce pollution and it can help us be more healthy and we'll be able to save money.

We can use energy more wisely. we can do this by turning off the lights and unplugging computers, TVs and other electronics when you're not using them. We can stop using dishwashers and wash using our hands, hang clothes to dry them and also refrain from opening the fridge too much; just take out everything you need.

Plant flowers for our bees and make a compost bin. By planting flowers we can help our bees, we need to help the bees because they're our main pollinators. We can also make a compost bin. Instead of throwing waste like fruit peels, leftover food and vegetables out, we can throw them in the compost bin. By doing this, these wastes will break down faster and can also make the soil more fertile.

    Art

These two interesting nameless photographs that I found are by Oleg Oprisco or Oprisco. He is a Russian photographer. He got interested in photography when he was 16 and at the age of 18 he started taking photos of his friends acquaintances. He says He takes his photography using an antique $50 dollar film camera.

If I were to use this image as an inspiration I would like to have the person wearing a half crying half smiling mask and the flowers would be Madonna Lilies and Black roses.

    Testing simple and complex sugars

Aim: To test a sample of food to determine whether it contains simple sugars
    Method:
    1. Place about 2 ml of the sample onto a test tube and then add 5 drops of benedict solution
    2. Heat with a Bunsen until it changes colour. Do not boil.

    Results:

Discussion: We dropped 5 drops of  Benedict solution to the food sample(apple). It was blue at first but after a few shakes it turned orange. The food sample turned orange because the Apple contains simple sugars.

Conclusion: The Apple contains simple sugars because it turned orange.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aim: To test if a sample food contains complex sugars.

    1. Place about 2 ml of the sample in a test tube.
    2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

Results: If complex sugars (i.e. starch) are present the iodine solution will change to brown colour to a blue/black colour

Discussion: We know that the food sample contains complex sugar because when we added iodine solution to the food sample it turned brown to black/blue.
Conclusion:the food sample contains complex sugar because it changed colours

The Small Intestine is around 20 feet long and about an inch in diameter. The small intestine is where 90 % of the digestion and absorption happens and the other 10% happens in the large intestine. Its main purpose is the absorption of nutrients and minerals from what we eat. It is a continues tube running from the stomach to anus. This is chicken intestine..You can eat it

The Large intestine is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and the digestive system vertebrates. This is where water is absorbed and the remaining waste material is stored as manure. It is transported into the rectum where is it stored until its egested.

The liver the second largest organ in the human body and it has two large sections called the right and left lobes. The liver's job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tracts before passing it to the rest of the body. It also detoxifies chemicals. It also turns proteins important for blood clotting and other uses. The liver is located it the right side of our belly and protected by the rib cage.

     Charlottes Web:

    Loneliness

We finished the book 'Charlotte's web' in Y9 ESOL and I chose the theme 'Loneliness'.Loneliness is when you feel alone. Being alone is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes it can make you feel free and makes you feel like you can do anything. Like me, I like being alone because I do not like talking much because it makes me feel tired but it does make you feel horrible at some times. It makes you feel unwanted, useless and sometimes makes you feel unconfident.

In the book Wilbur who was a pig. He used to have a loving owner named Fern who made him feel loved but one day he got sold to her Uncles farm and Fern promised Wilbur that she will visit him every day. One day Fern didn't come to the barn because it was raining hard and he really felt lonely without Fern, He felt depressed. "I'm less than two months old and I am tired of living," Wilbur said. He tried making friends but everyone in the barn but he still felt like he had no real friends. One day he felt determined to find a friend he walked around and he heard a voice "I'll be your friend" and that voice was Charlotte. Charlotte was also alone before she met Wilbur. She used to be always alone because she was a spider and she was small.

Charlotte and Wilbur helped each other to cope with their loneliness by being friends. Wilbur defended Charlotte from the other farm animals because they were saying that she's a spider and that she is weird. Wilbur said that he thinks Charlotte is beautiful. Charlotte also helped Wilbur from getting chopped up and becoming their Christmas dinner by Making webs with words like Some pig, Terrific, Radiant, Humble. When Charlotte had already saved Wilbur, she had babies and she died. Wilbur took the egg sack with him. He really treasured his friendship with Charlotte and Charlotte did too.

I sometimes do feel lonely, everyone does but when you feel lonely try to reach out to someone you trust and talk about your feelings.

    Biuret test

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.

    Method:
    1. Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide
    2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
    3. Shake the test tube gently for side to side

Results: If the solution remains blue then there is no protein. If the solution changes to a purple colour then protein is present

Discussion: We dropped 5 drops of copper sulfate onto our food sample( egg white ). We shook gently it and heated it. We saw how both of the two samples turned into a lighter purple colour. This occurred because we know that both of the milk and the egg white contains protein.

Conclusion:  The milk and the egg white contains protein

    - Deer
    -Alpaca
    -rabbit

On the 23rd of May, my Year 9 ESOL class went to Willowbank Wildlife reserve to see their animals for our research project. I've been to Willowbank Wildlife reserve before so I wasn't a bit surprised at what was going on but this time it was more fun and more educational. These are some of the animals that caught my attention: The fallow deer, the alpaca and the rabbits.

The first animal that caught my attention is the rabbits. I remembered that the rabbits were hanging around in their cages and in their warming boxes because it was cold outside. Our tour person came in the bunnies cage and she lifted the boxes and saw baby bunnies under. She lifted one up and showed the bunny to us, the bunny was small, mocha coloured and delicate. She let us touch it and it was very soft and I couldn't really touch it properly cause I was afraid I might squish it or hurt it. Then after admiring this cute little fluffy bunny, we went back to walking.

The second animal that I noticed was the Alpacas. The alpacas were in their cage eating the hay?/grass? in their trough. There were two alpacas, one was brown and one was white. Their fur looked very soft. The white alpaca noticed us so it came over, while the brown one is still eating. I felt the alpacas fur and unsurprisingly it was soft. It felt like I was touching my blanket. Then after patting it and observing we left the alpacas alone.

The third and final animal is the Fallow deer. The fallow deers we saw was small. We saw two of them. We had to keep quiet not to startle them and we did that successfully, I think... We fed the two
fallow deer and the two of them were both quiet and very pretty. They have brown fur with white spots, Sharp round black eyes and pointy ears. The two looked like they prefer to be resting more than playing. They both were poised and weren’t loud so I felt peaceful. Then soon we were done the feeding and looking at them we looked at more animals.
In conclusion, this trip with the 9ESOL class was fun and educational. We learnt lots about the animals we encountered and it was a lot more fun being with new people this time since I’ve been here.

    EYE

How the light travels from eye to the brain

The light first enters the cornea and refracts light into your pupil,The iris helps our eyes to only pass only a small amount of light then once the light enters the pupil it enters the lens and what the lens does is it focuses the light  onto your retina.Your retina is connected to the optic nerve. The optic nerves role is to carry the nerve impulses to the brain.Which then we can see the images in our mind .

    Particle Theory of Matter-Convection

Aim: To observe convection in a liquid

    1. Set up a Bunsen burner on a heatproof mat. Put the gauze mat on the tripod but leave it just to one side of the Bunsen burner.

    2. Fill a 200 ml  beaker with 150 ml cold water

    3. Place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze and allow it to settle for a few minutes.

    4. Carefully insert a drinking straw down one side of the beaker, ensuring the straw is touching the bottom of the beaker. Be careful as you do not want to disturb the water

5.Using tweezers, drop a crystal of potassium permanganate down the inside of the straw. Wait for the crystal to settle on the bottom of the beaker.

    6. Very gently, so to not disturb the water, remove the straw.

    7. Light the Bunsen and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outisde of the beaker where the crystal is. Observe.

    Results:The purple water rose

     3. Attach the drawing pins at even intervals along the length of metal rod
     4. C lamp one end of the metal rod to a retort stand.
     5. Position the retort stand so the unclamped end of the metal rod is in the Bunsen burner flame and start the stopwatch
     6. Record the time it takes for each pin to drop the table below

    Results:
    Discussion:

My group first heated the metal rod then we saw the pins dropping,.The reason why the pins drop down because the particles of the solid(the pins) are vibrating because of the heat that was transferred through the metal rod.Metal is a good thermal conductor.

    diffusion

Aim: To observe diffusion in a liquid.

    Method
1.Half fill your petri dish on your work bench with cold tap water.
2.Place your petri dish on your work bench and allow the water to become settled.
3.Using the tweezers, place a single crystal of potassium permanganate in the centre of the petri dish
    4.Observe for 5 minutes.
    5.Repeat the experiment using water.

    Results:
    Hot water

    Observation:

We first put the solute in the cold solvent then we observe. We saw that it was very slow and it took more then 5 minutes to spread. Then we tried it with hot water and we saw that it spread a lot quicker. So why did hot water spread the potassium permaganate quicker? Because it was hot and the particles were spreading more quickly.

    Investigating changes

Aim: to observe water as it changes state from solid to liquid and then to gas.
    Method:
     1. Collect enough ice so that your beaker is half full and place the thermometer into it while you set up the rest of the equipment.

     2. Set up the retort stand and clamp alongside the tripod and gauze mat.

     3. Place the beaker of ice on the gauze mat and gently clamp the thermometer so that it is held upright and the scale is easy to see. The bottom of your thermometer should be low enough to still be covered by water when the thin ice melts, but not touching the bottom of the beaker.

     4. Record the initial temperature of the ice into data table below.

     5. Light the Bunsen burner and start timing with the stopwatch.

     6. Measure and record the temperature every minute.

     7. Continue measuring and recording the temperature until the water has been boiling for 2 - 3 minutes.

    Results:
    Displaying IMG_4373.jpg

    Displaying IMG_4373.jpg

    Discussion:
We first filled in the beaker with ice then we open the Bunsen burner then we watched how the solid is slowly turning into liquid. The liquids temperature is increasing as it increases the particles of the liquid is separating we can see that steam/gas is evaporating. When it got to a hundred degrees the liquid started boiling and a lot of gas came out.
