English 2023

This year as a year 13, I attended the Level 3 English course for the whole year. What worked well for me was that I was able to finish my work. Even though I was able to improve my English writing skills, I definitely underestimated the marking criteria this year and had to force myself to work through it which was the difficult part. What didn't work well was my speaking assessment which is the speech. I didn't do well in the speeches as I lacked experience in public speaking and it isn't my strong asset.

Through level 3 English, I was able to gain UE literacy because of my writing portfolio.

What I could've done to enhance my learning is that I should've manage my time properly and maybe as for feedback more often so I would know what to improve. There was also a time when we missed several classes due to the strike so that affected my groove. Fortunately, my teacher has been patient with me and has helped me with my work through feedback in person and online.

My advice for year 13s next year is that it is difficult and do not underestimate the subject as the marking is quite strict. Doing the work immediately and finishing it early would definitely help as you could ask the teacher for more help.

What can my teacher do differently for future students is maybe utilize our Chromebooks more and maybe focus on one assessment instead of doing two at the same time?

Design

This folio was by another NZQA student exemplar and we had to arrange how the designer would sequence their folio. I decided to put the images with the characters at the start to show the development of the character design. Then the concept themes and posters go next as they have developed the characters already.

It was a bit complicated to know how these are sequenced because the colours are consistent throughout the folio.

I have finished the first panel of my design folio which consists of the development of my company and game's logo, character and mascot.

Now I am working on my panel two and drawing the assets for my "game" which will include weapons, environmental concepts, gameplay and level design to develop the world-building.

ESOL Speech Reflection

In ESOL, we have been working on our speeches. I wrote about "Why I Like the Spider-verse Movies". What went well was that I could write my second speech despite it being a last-minute change as I didn't like the first topic I chose as it would be too hard to talk about. What didn't go well was it was hard to talk in front of my classmates and that I kept forgetting what I had to talk about. What I could do to improve is to practice more .

Reflection

In term two of ESOL, we focused on finishing our reading logs and book reports. I wrote my book report about the novel I read The Cemetery Boys which is a novel I would recommend if you like suspense. We also started writing our speeches and my topic is about going against the limits. We mostly focused on our speaking skills and recalling skills which are useful skills to have.

I could use these skills I have been learning in the future and in my other classes, especially English and art.

I would like to improve on my presenting and speaking skills as those are skills I am afraid of pursuing because I have a terrible fear of speaking in front of a crowd and I hope next term I'll be able to be more comfortable and stutter less so I won't embarrass myself and people won't pity me.

Design 3.2

 BRIEF

NEXA is a video game company that is well known for its high quality visually appealing video games that is inquired me to create concepts and ideas for an upcoming video game that is visually appealing and mysterious that targets a young adult audience.

The design brief requires me to create a character design, a world concept and equipment concepts. It is required for me to add certain elements in my designs such as keeping a horror-esc element to the characters I am designing for the atmosphere of the game to be consistent with the genre. The art style of the characters is to be in semi-realism style.

I have been asked for production to include splash art and a character turnaround.

Painting Art 3.2

Subject: This illustration is what appears to be a humanoid creature with a masculine figure. He has long straight black hair and an earring. The creature is wearing a goat's skull on its head which cover's the subject's face and hides his facial expressions. This helps him appear to be quite mysterious which contrasts with the background which is very pastel and vibrant.

Narrative: "Personification" of a dream

ESOL Reflection Blog 20/03/23

In the past term in ESOL, we have been working on our reading log assessments. We are to read 5 texts plus a novel. The novel I am reading is The Cementary Boys which is a horror fiction novel about a boy who moved into a new town called Spencer where his father used to live. He meets this group of boys and a girl called Cara which changes his life.

Also, I learnt a lot of new vocabulary that I haven't heard or seen before in the texts such as the novel I am reading that. Like “Incredulous” which is a word that I have not seen before. It means unwilling or unable to believe in something. I could use this word in my future sentences as it is quite a big word and it could make me sound intelligent.

I would like to be able to learn more words in the future and be able to use them in future texts I will write.

Design - Series and Sequences

The designer came up with the mountain design from the roof-like design. Then they had a black dot first and then slowly develops their logo designer then applied it onto the pamphlet or poster once they were satisfied with their design.

Painting | Tahi; Waihanga Ngohe| Blog post one:

I have the same mind map as my Design subject

Here are some of my previous works before choosing a Kaupapa, Which are drastically different from the construct I chose.

The construct I decided to do is Post-Impressionism. Post-impressionism is what Roger Fry - an English artist- in 1906 called this genre of painting that builds from impressionism. This means that brighter and bold colours are used and everything is stylized and expressive, unlike impressionism which focuses on naturalism. Post - Impressionists tend to use thicker paint and distinct brush strokes while impressionists used thin brush strokes that were still visible and unblended but accurately depicts light. This can be observed in artists like Van Gogh, who first imitated impressionist artists and he wasn't successful so, he then developed a post-impressionist art style by adapting elements from his peer's paintings instead. Post-impressionism then paved the way for modern art which completely departs from traditional art and its philosophies during that time.

Post-Impressionism also mostly focuses and emphasizes on feelings and symbolism

Paul Cezanne is the father of Post Impressionism. He is known for reducing objects to their distinct shape than painting them with extreme detail while still keeping the saturated colours of impressionism. He then had a very unique brush stroke technique that is oriented rather than consecutive. Paul Cezanne then influenced Cubism through his use of perspective and geometric shapes in painting that predicted the cubist movement.

I wanted to do something different this year rather than doing things like naturalism, I would love to go for a more abstract and dynamic route and have more saturated and warm colours in my portfolio to extend my skills and try something new that I was not comfortable with.

Design Tahi; Waihanga Ngohe| Blog post one:

My Mind Map:
Here are some artworks I've done last year for my painting subject done digitally that I've done before I thought about my Kaupapa and Construct for this year,

For my construct, I decided to go for Concept Art. Concept art is what is used by illustrators and others as a reference for a product and to set a tone for the story. They work on: Character concepts, world concepts, and equipment concepts. For example, marvel movies have scene concept art to visualize how a scene will go. The VFX artists then use the concept art as a reference to see how the CGI effects and powers would look in the scene. Most concept artists use programs such as Photoshop for illustrations and Zbrush or Blender for 3D.

Character Concept: This is to build or create a character design concept and style from lots of research. From personality, aesthetic and visual appearance. Character concepts are used as a vehicle for storytelling. Every shape, colour and little detail is all there for a reason and bases what type of character you are creating. A good character design consists of a good silhouette, colour pallet and exaggeration.

Shape language is very important in character design as shape indicates what type of character they are. Circle or round characters are more bouncy, fun and friendly, Boxy characters give off a more strong and more heroic character while triangle characters are sharp which gives off a sense of danger, evil and fast and are mostly villains. But most triangles don't necessarily mean evil, they could also be an indicator that a character is smart.

World Concept: To have an understanding of architecture and scenery to create a world from scratch involving one's imagination. It is to have history, geography and ecology. In world-building,  There are two types of worlds to choose from. Real-world fantasy is based on real-world events and second-world fantasy is to create new lands, species and governments.

Equipment Concept: when concept artists focus on creating a character's equipment.  Equipment concept art enhances and gives the world a better definition. Equipment concept art has to do with armour, weapons, and stuff that the characters interact with.

This year, I'm planning to use a program called Procreate for Ipad to work on my portfolio this year.

I chose this construct as I want to be a concept artist or an illustrator as I am interested in working for the Video Game Industry.

Art - Design | Rāhine Monday 13th February

Last week in Art (painting), our class were made to make mood boards from different artists for the kaupapa were focusing on. I chose concept art as my theme as I am interested in this path and would like to learn from this.

In my mood board, the most common theme I have is the cyber-robotic theme as I am interested in this topic. I also mostly do fantasy drawings so creating cyber-like designs will help me branch out and have more flexibility in my abilities.

This week, we were told to make thumbnail sketches and I chose an artwork from Jamie Ro who is a concept artist and Illustrator.

English 2023

This year in English, what I want to get out of this class is that I want to be able to broaden and improve my writing skills and hope to get a University Entrance from this class. I also hope to improve my observational skills in this class and think more outside the box as I tend to only look into the obvious and not look too deep into things. I think this course will help me achieve my goals and I think it would be fun.
