BOard 1

Last week in art, I finished three pieces for my folio 1. Unfortunately, I haven't started my board two but I have a single piece finished.

These are three of the pieces I will put on my board 1

I was inspired by horror comic covers for this piece.

Folio Board 1 update

I would like to work on the mirror more since it takes up space but it looks boring.
I have also been working on the top and the two squares for the past few weeks.

I would like to tweak the first digital painting I did since I do not like how the face looks. Everything else is okay though but this week I will be working on the landscapes.

Impressionalism notes

 https://www.sothebys.com/en/art-movements/impressionism

  •  A style developed in France during the mid to late 19th century
  • often termed the first movement in modern painting
  • Artists applied new paint layers over wet paint layers which softened and blended the colors.
  • The application added opaque dimensions of colour
  • Japanese influence (ukiyo-e ) - figures are captured in a single moment and foreshortening
These artists working outside instead of in a studio helped them capture the impression of light and instead of using black and grey in shadows, they used complementary colours.

My thoughts are that using colours that are other than black and white makes the painting pop out more and helps convey a brighter and less gloomy feeling making the artwork look like it's from another place that isn't earth.

No.
I can implement impressionalism in my folio by blending layering paints over paint that is still wet. I also would try to attempt the lighting in impressionism  even though I struggle with lighting.

Glazing

Glazing is the process of applying translucent paint over an opaque layer. This technique is mostly used by painters to create a glow. It can also be used to describe a form. Applying glaze takes patience though, the lower layer has to be really really dry before applying the translucent layer and oil paints take a while to dry otherwise the opaque colour under will lift and the glaze will no longer be translucent. For luminosity, applying multiple layers of translucent colour is the best way but requires the most patience. Thin means the addition of pigment in oil. It is done in oil painting to increase viscosity and spreadability.

This year, my Kaupapa is Spiritual/Cultural. It is more on the spiritual side as I would be basing my portfolio around vampires I chose this theme because I like the vampire and victorian aesthetic, along with the dark theme.

I chose to reflect this theme using these objects. Heart since that's where blood pumps. A bat since vampires can turn to bats. Moon because they mostly thrive in the night and apple because it's red and it's like the temptation fruit from adam and eve. All of these relate to my Vampire kaupapa.  I don't think I demonstrated much but I used carravagios technique of a dark brown background.

Art Folio progress

In the past few weeks, I have been working on this Oil painting of a mirror. I chose oil painting for this to show depth and to have a 3D-like effect. I chose this colour scheme to match with the rest of my folio

I started this painting below just recently. It is a heart and two roses on a plate. I first started with a red base and used black to block out the shapes I wanted to convey in the piece. Then I slowly built it up with different shades of red as I paint over it.

BLocking

It is relevant to my portfolio since I've painted a bat, moon, apple and a heart organ. These are all symbolic of the vampire theme I'm going for. If these were to go in my folio I would block it in with greyer colours and add red so I could stay constant with my theme

Block Oainting

What is Block painting in oil painting? It is the process of blocking in the canvas so none of the white from the canvas shows through. This is done to establish the form and elements of the painting and it is usually done without much detail.

Sgrafito

I tried to use the sgraffito technique in digital art. I did that by first painting the skull using the oil paint brush in procreate and then using the eraser tool to create the effect of it being scratched. This is for my second board so I might edit it in the future.

For portfolio updates, I have been working on an oil painting of a frame of a mirror so it'll create a 3d effect to give my folio more depth.

Biology

In Biology, we are learning about cell transportation and in particular, diffusion. After conducting a diffusion experiment in class, our task was to create something to show our learning. I decided to work with Lauren and we made an animation.

This is our animation

Oil Paint

We used a different technique this time as we directly put the oil paint without diluting it. It was a little hard to work with but it was fun. If I were to work on this longer, I probably could've added more detail and painted over the sketch

English Practice paragraph.

In English, we are preparing for our assessment. We did a practice paragraph for the movie 'Silver Lining's Playbook'. Where we had to analyse the aspects and state why those specific aspects were put in the film by the director.

In this scene, the director uses the handheld camera with the aspect of editing. This is demonstrated through the use of the technique of handheld camera shot, which was used in most of the scenes making the scenes shaky and unsteady, in addition to the aspect of editing with lots of scene skipping or jump cuts. Making everything seem fast-paced and onto the point. The director uses the film techniques of handheld camera shots along with editing effectively, to show the tense and unstableness of the situations that the characters are in. These techniques demonstrate to the audience how fast-paced and unsteady the scene is, making the audience feel anxious about what's to come next. Usually in movies, we as the audience are supposed to just get to know the characters and “settle in '' but in this movie’s case, we are purposely made to feel anxious and perhaps even lightheaded to make us feel what it's like to be in the character's shoes. For example, the protagonist Pat has bipolar disorder, which is a type of mental illness that is associated with mood swings and depressive episodes. The unstableness and the jump cuts of the scene help the audience empathize with what Pat is feeling. These aspects also work effectively with lighting and set design, as it adds to the atmosphere of the characters' situation, and help us understand and feel for the characters better. This is important because mental illness is more common than people think, and many people suffer from it. The director executes this really well as everyone has their own sufferings. Through this movie, it helps us empathise with what the characters are feeling and what they're going through and how they’re just like every other person and that they shouldn’t be outcasted and treated differently because of their mental illnesses as they didn’t choose to have it.

English film blog

  Camera in Film.

The parts of the camera: Lenses, which is the tool that focuses light. All lenses have a fixed, which determines the focal view, and a variable focal length, which is the distance from the center of the lens where the image is in focus. We can control how much light gets in the frame through a hole called an aperture which is measured in f-stops and there are 8 of them.

Sound production

There are different types of microphones that record sounds and muffle sounds from unwanted places. There are also sound directors which decide what sounds go in the film

The director

The director is the one who directs the movie and decides where the camera goes. It is important for the director and the actor to build trust so that the movie comes out well and that they are able to create a safe space for the team to have their creativity flowing. Directors need to have a strong vision and is able to communicate it clearly

A common mistake for new directors is that they focus on the surface level of acting instead of the actual work that goes into the film.

Week 10 art blog

This week in arts, we worked on creating our series 1.  My series relates to my artists' models because my series one mostly consists of portraits. I will be focusing on gray scaling and since I would be painting two paintings in digital for my series one, I would focus on keeping the texture of my painting. My series mostly consists of red, black, white, grays, and brown.

Artist Models

For my thumbnail sketches for my board, I've taken multiple inspirations from various renaissance artists as I will be creating a board of a vampire in the victorian era.

One of the artist models I will reference and implement is Johannes Vermeer. I want to reference the artwork "Girl with the Pearl Earring" specifically for my third artwork in my portfolio, as I really like the composition and the way the artwork is captivating. I also like the lighting and the deep shadows. It is something I'd like to achieve in my artwork.

The second artist model I will reference is John Constable for the landscapes I am painting for the Dracula's castle

For my last artist model, I chose Kathe Kollwitz because of her use of values and monochromatic colors
, and use of charcoal.

Lesson 4 week 9 art blog

This week in art we've been working on our first portfolio board. The pieces in my folio include the colours black, white and browns to give a menacing vibe and red to show the elegance of the vampire and wine. The rest of my board would all be in black and white so it all relates to one of my artist model Kathe Kollwitz. the piece in the middle of my board and the second to last piece would be related to James Constable as I would be drawing an interior and a landscape of the vampire's castle. The third artist I would reference is Johannes Vermeer through out the rest of my board as well since I like the renaissance style and it fits my board very well.

Painters Block

We had to read this article for art class to see what people do to get rid of Painter block also commonly known as an art block.  https://emptyeasel.com/2011/02/08/warm-up-excercises-for-painters-how-to-break-through-painters-block/ . Painter's block is when an artist cannot access their creativity or cannot bring themselves to create new artwork. If I get Painter's block, I would do other things to inspire me, or go on social media and look at other people's arworks. I would also go on Pinterest because it is a very creative app.

I also paint a lot of fanart so I watch the media I am making fanart of and get inspired by that.

Solidifying Kaupapa

This year, my Kaupapa is Spiritual/Cultural. It is more on the spiritual side as I would be basing my portfolio around vampires I chose this theme because I like the vampire and victorian aesthetic, along with the dark theme.

Dracula is a vampire, he is from the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. I will be painting mirrors without reflections to show that he is a vampire. I would also mostly paint in black and white to make give my paintings more of a menacing vibe and I would also add splashes of red to make it more eye-catching. I would also paint a portrait of him in my own interpretation inspired by others as well.

I chose Dracula as a subject matter because he is a vampire and is the original one.
