- it keeps the paint from soaking and eating the canvas.

- use paint thinner.

paint that is applied to a canvas or panel in quantities.

- a stain of colour painted onto white ground. Usually in earth colours and browns

That it takes almost a year to varnish an oil paintitn

I think that the next thing you should focus on is working more on the lighting so you can really bring out the highlights and shadows. But even without that, this is a truly impressive artwork that you created.
