•  A style developed in France during the mid to late 19th century 
• often termed the first movement in modern painting
• Artists applied new paint layers over wet paint layers which softened and blended the colors.
• The application added opaque dimensions of colour
• Japanese influence (ukiyo-e ) - figures are captured in a single moment and foreshortening

 These artists working outside instead of in a studio helped them capture the impression of light and instead of using black and grey in shadows, they used complementary colours. 

 My thoughts are that using colours that are other than black and white makes the painting pop out more and helps convey a brighter and less gloomy feeling making the artwork look like it's from another place that isn't earth.

I can implement impressionalism in my folio by blending layering paints over paint that is still wet. I also would try to attempt the lighting in impressionism  even though I struggle with lighting.
